How to Report an Accident

Call the Police Immediately

Dialing 911 is the first thing you should do when you’re in an accident. The police can help to protect all parties involved, no matter who’s at fault. They’re also helpful and can call the right people if there are any injuries on the site. Having a police report is helpful when you go to report your accident to Maryland Auto Insurance Fund.

Don’t Admit Fault

Never say that you were the cause of the accident, even if you know you were. The police and insurance investigators are there to do their job and investigate all aspects of the accident. Let them do their job and make the determination of who was at fault in the accident. They’ll determine who was at fault and it’ll be included in the police report.

Exchange Information With Any Driver Involved

You want to exchange information with anyone involved in the accident. This includes any witnesses that stuck around after the crash and saw it happen. Having contact information with the other parties can come in handy when you’re reporting the accident. Make sure you both give and receive the following information:

Phone number
Make and model of cars
License plate number
Driver’s license number

Take Pictures of Any Damage

Pictures can help to move your claim along faster. Getting detailed pictures that show all of the damage can help them to make any decisions. However, make sure you don’t interfere with the police doing their job or take pictures that could put you in harm’s way. Make sure both you and your car are in a safe place when you’re taking pictures.

Contact Your MAIF Claims Adjuster

When all of this is done, and everyone is safe, it’s time to report your accident to MAIF. The claims adjuster will assist you with your situation, evaluating the damage and putting you in contact with a Maryland Auto Insurance Collision Damage Assessment Center so you can get an official repair quote.
